Autumn Skin Self Care

As the radiant summer sun and sweet floral scents depart for another year, the autumnal ‘golden hour’, with its soft warming golden light embraces us like an old friend, let us remember to take some time out to prepare our body and mind for the winter ahead.

During autumn, with the drop in temperature, lower humidity and central heating, our skin may become more dehydrated due to the lack of natural sebum. This can result in moisture loss and our skin becoming susceptible to tightness, dryness, creating a dull complexion and heightened skin sensitivity. It’s not just our face that may require some extra attention, our body can also benefit from upping our morning and evening moisturising routine - remember to lock in that moisture following your bath/shower!

Being used for centuries in holistic and natural skin care, essential oils, with their unique properties, can be super beneficial during this season’s transition. Their properties can work on all skin types, being calming, soothing and naturally moisturising and so much more kinder to our skin than harsh products containing high pH levels.

Some essential oils to add during the autumn and winter months:

Rose Geranium: balances the skin’s natural oil production helping to minimise the appearance of enlarged pores, brightens and removes deal skin cells. Soothing and antimicrobial.

Neroli: aids in balancing surface oils, a natural cleanser with anti-oxidant qualities.

Helichrysum: considered a precious essential oil due to its low yield. Calming and a powerful anti-inflammatory oil as well as aiding skin cell regeneration. Anti-oxidant, anti-microbial and anti-bacterial.

Geranium: soothing and balancing aiding skin sensitivities. Particular useful for acne prone skin. Reputed to effectively eliminate dead skin cells, promoting a healthier skin.

Rosemary: great for all skin types providing support for maintaining balanced, hydrated, firmer and healthier glowing skin.

Benzoin: hydrating oil aiding the prevention of moisture loss. Cleanser - supporting the reduction of the appearance of enlarged pores and eliminating harmful microbes.

Carrier Oils

Carrier oils are great for providing that extra hydration our skin yearns. Consider adding the following to your skin routine:

Rosehip Seed Oil: this oil has a natural affiliation with the skin especially tissue regeneration and anti-wrinkle benefits. High in polyunsaturated fats. Absorbed very quickly by the skin without leaving a greasy residue.

Sunflower Oil: this oil resembles our sebum and mirrors our skin’s natural lipids. Works best diluted with other carrier oils. Absorbed slowly by the skin and can feel slightly waxy until warmed to body temperature. Leaves skin with a slightly oily residue.

Fractionated Coconut Oil: very good for dry, itchy and sensitive skin. Believed to be the closest substance to sub-cutaneous fat. Absorbed fast by the skin, leaving a smooth and silky finish with skin feeling moisturised rather than greasy.

Jojoba Oil: soothing and deeply nourishing and moisturising. Rich in Vitamin E and especially good for dehydrated and mature skin. Supports rebalancing of oily and problem skin types. Average absorption, leaving the skin with a silky feeling.
